Accomplishments

We are proud to provide the forums and skills for lgbt people to weigh in on issues important to them.

Ground-breaking Journalism
The Gully online magazine consistently offers ground-breaking journalism by lgbt writers. Only in The Gully will you regularly find "mainstream" concerns like postwar Iraq in Hell, Conquering Hero, side-by-side with "queer" ones like the fight for lesbian rights in Guatemala in the video, Lesbiradas Says, Enough!

Homocom is particularly proud to produce The Gully en español. Though Spanish is the first language of more than 300 million people in 21 countries worldwide, The Gully en español is one of the few sources of lgbt news, culture and thought in Spanish.

Nurturing Activism
The magazines not only share information and ideas with tens of thousands of readers a month from over a hundred countries, but ways for readers to get involved. Activists have reported that The Gully's sample letters and activist information have made a difference.

Cutting Edge
Last year, we completely redesigned the magazine, adding breaking news, video, interactive elements, and more resources, including a lesbian channel page, Dyke World.

Unleashing Young Journalists
We held our first "Out For the Truth" youth journalism workshop in November 2002. Five students participated from Latin America, the U.S., and Russia. The young Russian lesbian became the first intern of The Gully.

We've continued to nurture young journalists and offer skill-sharing opportunities for activists and academics, including our online journalism bootcamp.

Creating Role Models
"In Our Own Words," our oral history project, has already completed several interviews. Many were published as first person essays in The Gully. Interviewees included Mona, an Iranian lesbian still living in Iran, Cheikh, a gay African immigrant AIDS worker in London, and a young Russian student in the United States.

We look forward to strengthening these programs, and exploring new ones both to inspire lgbt community-building and nurture progressive queer activism in the world at large.
